About the Calculation

What Is BMI?

Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight in relation to your height. It is commonly used as a quick screening tool to identify general weight categories.

BMI can be a useful starting point, but it does not directly measure body fat, muscle mass, or overall health.

The Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

Example 68 kg ÷ 1.70² = 23.5

Understand Your BMI Result

Adult BMI results are generally grouped into the following ranges.

BMI range Category General interpretation
Below 18.5 Underweight Below the general healthy adult range
18.5 – 24.9 Healthy Weight Within the general healthy adult range
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight Above the general healthy adult range
30.0 – 34.9 Obesity Class 1 Higher weight-related health risk may be present
35.0 – 39.9 Obesity Class 2 Further health assessment may be helpful
40.0 or higher Obesity Class 3 Professional health guidance is recommended

These are general screening categories for adults and should be interpreted alongside other health factors.

About the Calculation

BMI Is Useful, but It Has Limits It Is Not the Whole Picture.

BMI uses only height and weight. Body composition, age, health history, and fat distribution can also influence how the result should be interpreted.

What BMI Can Show

  • Weight relative to height
  • A general adult weight category
  • A starting point for further assessment

What BMI Cannot Show

  • Body fat percentage
  • Muscle mass versus fat mass
  • Where body fat is stored
  • Your overall health status
Example

This adult BMI calculator is not intended for anyone under 18 or for use during pregnancy. Results may also be less appropriate for people with medical conditions that significantly affect body weight or body composition.
